The Popularity of Thailand to Get a Tattoo

You are probably wondering why people traveling to Thailand are mostly interested in getting a tattoo. Most of these people are only planning to have a holiday and yet they end up with a tattoo (or two) once they are in the country. What kind of super power does the country have? What makes them attracted to the idea that they should have the tattoo once they are in Thailand?

The Basic Condition

If you want to consider this situation in the most logical manner, there is a reasonable explanation for such phenomenon. You see, Thailand is rich in cultural heritage and values. Since it is also rich in Buddhist symbols and signs, you can see them in most places. Everywhere you go, you will see those symbols.

Most travelers are intrigued by the unique designs of the symbols. Lotus, for instance, has been known for its classic beauty and has been quite a popular option among tourists. Of course, there are still other symbols and designs that appeal to them but you need to realize that the local unique cultural and historical aspects have their own artistic value – and this is the main reason why travelers love them.

Sak Yant: The Popular Traditional Tattoo

When you go to Thailand, you will probably hear a lot of Sak Yant and its magical properties. Originally, Sak Yant is performed by monks and the tattoos are believed to have a magical power that will be ‘transferred’ to those having the tattoos. After all, there is something unique about this tattoo itself in terms of the making process. Unlike the modern tattoo with the machine and all, the Sak Yant is performed by pricking the skin with the sharp or pointed bamboo (today, it is quite common to use steel needles). The process itself is pretty fast and it does take a serious skill to create the artistic form. However, it is quite painful and you need to get yourself used to the sensation.

Thai people believe that the tattoo isn’t just a tattoo; it is a path to make you live an honest life and life that goes according to the path of truth. Sak Yant is believed to give protection and good luck but if you misbehave, the sacred Thai tattoos can bring you misery and misfortune.  It is up to you to believe such claim or not but for most people, the tattoo acts as a reminder that they should be kind to others and they should follow the path of wisdom and truth.
